Kabelo Gwamanda is the newly elected mayor of Johannesburg.

He comes from the Al-Jama-ah party in council, and has received the backing of the ANC, EFF and minority parties in council.

He replaces former mayor Thapelo Amad, who resigned weeks ago.

The total number of votes cast was 266 votes.

Gwamanda received 139 votes, while ActionSA's Funzi Ngobeni garnered 59 votes and former mayor Mpho Phalatse received 68 votes.

The new mayor was sworn in moments after he was announced as the man at the helm of the country's economic hub.
