The Civil Aviation Authority has launched a probe into a light aircraft crash in Gauteng on Wednesday morning.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is investigating a light aircraft crash in Gauteng on Wednesday morning.

CAA spokesperson Sisa Majola said the Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) was informed of an aircraft accident at around 07:40 at the Eagles Creek Aerodrome next to the N14 highway in Knoppieslaagte.

Emer-G-Med paramedics responded and when they arrived at the scene found that the aircraft had crashed into a river.

“The pilot ... was declared dead on arrival,” said Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo referred News24 to the CAA.

Majola confirmed there had only been one occupant in the aircraft.

“There was one occupant onboard, who sustained fatal injuries. The aircraft sustained substantial damage,” he said.

“The AIID does have investigators on-site to start the process of evidence collection and to gather more information that will define the size and scope of the investigation as well as the timeframe for the issuance of a final report.”

Majola added that if a “critical safety issue” is identified, the investigating team will “immediately notify relevant parties so that appropriate action can be taken”.

Majola expected a preliminary report to be issued within 30 days.
