• While academics took centre stage during her matric year, she made sure that she didn't miss out on the fun aspects of being in matric.
• She plans to study medicine and hopes that the new venture will be filled with more growth and a chance to explore new opportunities.

Reddam House matric pupil Jamie Rademeyer gave new meaning to the term "with flying colours" when she bagged seven distinctions, got 100% for mathematics and achieved more than 90% for each of her subjects.

But it wasn't all smooth sailing, she told News24.

The pupil, from Reddam House in Bedfordview, said her matric year had a rocky start with the volume of projects, tests and assignments she had to complete.

Her marks dropped in the first term but with the help of her teachers, she pushed herself to a point where she was used to the workload and pace of Grade 12.

She also adopted various study methods, watched YouTube videos and researched topics to ensure that she had a basic understanding of what she was dealing with. She relied heavily on mind maps to study subjects like life sciences because they helped her to remember content easily.

Her efforts and zeal earned her the title of valedictorian.

But books aside, Rademeyer said she tried not to deprive herself of the other aspects of matric.

"Matric was a very fun year with new opportunities, including the lead roles and all the other events that happened throughout the year.

"This was the very same time where [pupils] could look forward to their matric jacket and their first day of orientation. It was really a combination of having to work hard and focus on your academics but also have moments where you could have your mind off academics and just have fun and make memories," she said.

Her proudest moment was being elected head girl.

She said:

Rademeyer, who found that her matric year was full of growth, hopes university will allow her to learn more about herself while building strong connections with new people.

"Reddam House helped make me an all-rounded student and gave me opportunities I don't think I would have gotten anywhere else. I was deeply invested in the culture side and loved doing dancing, acting, and swam for our school," she said.

She is preparing to study medicine at the University of Pretoria, and hopes her new adventure will provide her with the same growth she experienced at Reddam House.

"I have been at Reddam House for 12 years, and having to go to a completely different institution with people I don't know and experience I have not heard of before, I am very excited to have that room to grow," she said.
