A Mpumalanga member of the provincial legislature has been arrested for fraud.
A Mpumalanga member of the provincial legislature (MPL) and former municipality employees were arrested on charges of fraud and corruption, which amounted to more than R34 million.
Former acting municipal manager and MPL Phakamile Thwala was arrested on Thursday, alongside former municipal managers Linda Bennet Tshabala and Joseph Solly Madubula Mabuza.
Mpumalanga Hawks arrested the group for fraud and corruption, amounting to R34.7 million.
Mabuza scored a tender from the municipality. He and his company were charged with contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act, corruption and fraud.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said the group appeared in the Volksrust Magistrate's Court and were each granted R35 000 bail, except for the former project manager, Luthando Mpangeva, who has a pending fraud and corruption case.

The court granted Mpangeva R40 000 bail because of the pending charges. He will appear in court on 1 July for his pending case.
"The court imposed conditions on all of them that they must not interfere with the investigation and should be released after the bail amount is paid in full. The court further warned that, if they don't come to court on the day set, the court will issue a warrant of arrest, and bail money will be forfeited to the State," said Sekgotodi.
The matter was postponed to 6 July.
