A man, who allegedly murdered his two-year-old stepson, has been arrested, North West police said.

Saame Mogogane, 38, allegedly committed the crime last Wednesday.

Mogogane's wife, the toddler's mother, left the two-year-old in his care when she went to work.

When she returned home the same afternoon, she noticed her unresponsive son in bed, with several injuries.

She called emergency services, and the child was declared dead at their home in Tlapeng Village, Madibogo.

On Monday, the 38-year-old appeared in the Atamelang Magistrate's Court on a murder charge.

He will return to the same court on Wednesday.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena said he was shocked by the child's murder.

He called on communities to protect and speak up for vulnerable victims of abuse.
