A 22-year-old biker was caught speeding and was arrested for reckless and negligent driving.

A 22-year-old biker was arrested after he clocked 223km/h on the N1 near Centurion – a 120km/h zone – on Sunday, according to traffic police.

"The speedster allegedly told the officers that he was rushing to Krugersdorp for a jolly day," Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Sello Maremane said.

He said the biker was arrested on the spot and taken to the Lyttelton police station, where he was charged with reckless and negligent driving, and an alternative charge of exceeding the general speed limit.

The man appeared in the Pretoria Central Magistrate's Court on Monday and was released on R1 500 bail.

Maremane said excessive speeding was one of the province's most significant risks to road safety.

"The majority of road fatalities are as a result of reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous overtaking, especially in the face of oncoming traffic," he said.
