Commuters didn't hold back after an alcohol truck lost its load in Fourways, Gauteng on Friday morning.

What started off as a normal morning of heavy rush-hour traffic on William Nicol Drive soon turned into chaos.

The truck had lost its load in the rainy weather and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said their officers rushed to the scene.

By the time they arrived, the truck had already left – but beer bottles were scattered across the road.

Swarms of people came from all directions towards the scene. Some left their car doors open and ran back with bottles (or cases) of liquor in their hands.

Others shouted: "Driver emisha taxi", which translates to "driver, stop the taxi!" when they saw what was on offer on the road.

"Officers attending the scene assisted in clearing the broken beer bottles from the roadway for traffic to flow,” said JMPD's Xolani Fihla.

Fihla urged motorists to drive cautiously in the wet weather, reduce their vehicle speed, and keep a safe following distance.

Johannesburg has been experiencing continuous rainfall throughout the week. The South African Weather Service warns of more showers and thunderstorms.
