Multi-million upgrade project under way in Gugulethu.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis conducted a site inspection in Gugulethu this week where upgrade work is being done on a sewer and roads. 

His visit was part of the Mayoral Priority Programme on Sanitation. The sewer and road upgrades project across Cape Town is expected to be completed by April 2023. 

According to the city, Steve Biko Road (formerly known as NY1), NY 5, NY 149 and NY 156 roads and sewage pipes had already been completed.

The city said the work involved excavating the road to access and move the sewer line (the pipes that carry the wastewater away from the household pipes) so that it was under the road surface, and not between properties. This minimises sewer overflows when blockages occur.

The road was then also resurfaced.

The project was initially delayed due to a legal dispute with the previous contractor and the City of Cape Town was forced to restart it. 

Hill-Lewis said the project was a massive upgrade for the Gugulethu community.

"It's wonderful to see this [part of the] project completed. It has taken nearly this entire year so far but now we have beautiful new roads, sewage deep, deep underneath this road, new sidewalks, new stormwater drains, just in time for the festive season," the mayor said.
