Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says the murder of a Reneilwe Community Learning Centre student in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, is a loss to the higher education sector. 

Mabutho Jenamo, 18, died on Tuesday from multiple stab wounds he sustained during a robbery. 

He and his friends were traveling from campus, where they had attended orientation, when they were attacked. 

Four attackers made off with his cellphone and wallet and robbed his friends of their possessions.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said a case of murder was being investigated.

She said suspects were arrested and appeared at the Mamelodi Magistrate's court on Wednesday. 

Nzimande welcomed the arrests and praised the members of the community who had identified the suspects. 

The Department of Higher Education said it would provide support to Jenamo's family.
